I’m a little tipsy, but I still have my wits about me. I’m clear-headed, though not entirely sure-footed. Braden is in better shape than me, walking with the confidence of a sober man. We’d left the bar and we’re headed back to my place.

“You’re an amazing dancer,” I say. I take Braden’s hand in mine and snuggle in close to him. We still have our otter masks on.

Even under the mask and in the semi-darkness, I can see Braden’s blush. “I don’t know if you’d call that dancing, but sure.”

I wave my arms around to a beat that no one hears, including me. “Dancing isn’t so much about looking great, it’s about finding the beat and leaning into it.”

“If anyone’s a good dancer,” Braden says, “it’s you.”

I grab Braden’s arm and snuggle in close to his shoulder, stealing warmth from him. “What’s important is we had a good time. Right?”

Braden looks down at me. “I had a wonderful time. I think I’m liking Chad and Lucas a bit more, now that I know they’re not after you.”

I roll my eyes. “They are a match I didn’t see coming, but they’re a match that seems to work.”

He sounds almost hesitant when he asks, “Can I ask what’s the deal with you and Chad? I thought you were together when I first came back here, but clearly you’re not.”

I feel a bit uncertain of how to answer. But I can’t just not answer, so I dive in. “We’re good friends,” I say. “You’re right that we’re close and we, uh, we have had fun together a handful of times, but it’s never been more than just getting our rocks off. There was never any emotion to it. It was fun, but mechanical.” I feel like I’m babbling, so I quickly bring this to an end. “With you, though…everything is different and everything is mind-blowingly better.” When he’s silent for a long moment, I ask, “Are you mad?”

He shakes his head. “I can’t hold your history against you, but it just feels a bit odd for him to still always be around and for you to be so close to him. But if you swear nothing is going on…”

“Nothing at all. That’s in the past now.”

“Then I’ll be okay with it. It helps that I know Chad is with Lucas now and Lucas seems to want that boundary drawn, too.” He takes a deep inhale and then lets it out, and it feels like he’s letting out more than just a breath. He puts his arm around my shoulder and I slip one around his waist. “You’re mine now.” He kisses the top of my head.

“I wouldn’t have it any other way.”

As we turn the last corner before my condo, Braden squeezes my shoulders, pulling me in tight. “I don’t want tonight’s fun to end. I don’t want to go to bed.”

I look up at him. “The fun doesn’t have to end. We can have a little afterparty.” As we step up to my front door, I say, “I’m sure you’ve seen the hot tub in the back.
